Training, not therapy

4 min read · Lesson 1 of 14

This is practical skills training based on research and tested in workplace trials. Its purpose is to help you handle pressure differently, not to help you produce more.

You are probably here because work asks a lot of you, and lately that pressure has been costing you more than it should.

A deadline arrives and your stomach drops. A difficult email remains unopened for a third day. A presentation goes well, but your mind continues replaying it throughout the evening.

None of this means that something is wrong with you. It means you are responding to pressure in a way that will feel familiar to many people. This program will help you explore a different response.

What exactly is this program?

It has been adapted from a short workplace training program that psychologists have delivered in organisations and studied in trials for several decades.

The researchers describe it in one sentence that this app has intentionally kept: “This is a psychological and behavioural skills training program. It is training, not therapy.”

Both parts of that sentence are important.

Training means the program is practical. You will learn two skills and practise them using situations from your own working life. The program does not ask you to examine your past.

Not therapy means exactly that. If you are experiencing serious difficulties, this program may not provide the level of support you need. It will continue to make that clear and guide you towards other forms of help when appropriate.

What did the trials find?

In randomised trials, people who completed the training reported less psychological distress, better general mental health, and less burnout several months later. Similar findings appeared across different countries and types of work.

One result is especially notable. The participants who were struggling most when the training began also showed the greatest improvement. In one trial, 69% of the more distressed participants who completed the training experienced a clinically meaningful improvement in their mental health.

Before you begin, there are three important limitations to understand.

  • The studies used live group workshops led by a trainer. This specific program has not been tested as a self-guided app. Treat it as a careful adaptation of a well-tested training method, not as a product that has itself been tested in clinical trials.
  • This program does not promise to improve your productivity. The trials measured well-being, not performance ratings. Research has found links between psychological flexibility and outcomes such as fewer errors over time or faster learning. However, these are indirect associations, not promises about what this program will do. The program claims only to help change how you handle pressure.
  • If you are struggling significantly, take that seriously rather than relying only on this program. This app includes dedicated programs for burnout, low mood, worry, and poor sleep. It also provides ways to connect with professional support.
