The whiteboard and the switching loop
Every switch uses mental resources. As those resources decrease, resisting the next switch becomes harder. That is how a few interruptions can turn into a repeating loop.
The previous lesson explained the cost of one switch. This lesson looks at why switches begin to multiply, turning an occasional interruption into a pattern.
Imagine that your mind contains an internal whiteboard. It holds the information you need for your current task: what you have decided, what you are comparing and what you intend to do next.
When you switch tasks, you erase that whiteboard and replace its contents with the information required for the new task. When interruptions happen frequently, you repeat this process again and again.
Each change uses mental resources. The important part is that having fewer resources available can lead to even more switching.
The loop has four steps:
- You switch. The reason may be external or internal. Either way, the contents of your mental whiteboard need to be replaced.
- Your mental resources decrease. Repeatedly reorganising what you are holding in mind requires effort. Eventually, you need a break to restore some of that capacity.
- Distractions become harder to resist. Executive function acts like a manager for your attention. It helps you ignore distractions and return to your priorities. When your mental resources are low, this control becomes less effective. Returning to the original task also becomes more difficult.
- You switch again. When your resources are low, attention is more likely to move toward whatever feels easiest or is immediately available.
This helps explain why you can feel like a different person by the afternoon. It is not a moral failure or proof that your discipline has disappeared.
Your mental resources have been reduced by several hours of repeatedly clearing and rebuilding the whiteboard. One of the first abilities affected is your capacity to resist the next distraction.
Lesson 3 showed that 44% of measured interruptions began internally. Research suggests that conditioning may help explain this.
When external interruptions stop, people often continue to interrupt themselves. Their attention maintains the rhythm it has become accustomed to. If the environment no longer provides the next interruption, they may create one by checking an application, opening a website or reaching for their phone.
This is an important distinction. Self-interruptions are not random failures of willpower. They can be part of a learned rhythm.
You have become used to a certain pace of interruption. When the environment becomes quiet, your behaviour may continue supplying that pace.
The useful part is that a learned rhythm can be retrained. This is why deciding to try harder has rarely solved the problem. The aim is to change the pattern, not judge the person following it.
Stress can make the loop move faster. Research conducted during ordinary working days has found that faster switching between devices is associated with higher stress.
The relationship can work in both directions. Frequent switching can increase stress, while stress can make attention more likely to switch again. This is also one reason Lesson 13 directs some people toward the burnout program.
Where can you interrupt the loop? You cannot simply decide to have more mental resources. However, you can work on two parts of the pattern:
- Reduce unnecessary switching. This is the focus of Unit 2.
- Restore your mental resources. This is the focus of Unit 3.
These are the two parts of the loop you can influence directly.
